Romans 3:22-23 “There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God.” In my experience, questioning the traditional understanding of Adam and Eve is often met with theological objections rather than scientific ones. Some of the concerns raised, such as Adam’s appearance in certain genealogies… [Read more…]
The buzz generated by the Christianity Today article examining recent questions about Adam and Eve apparently caught the attention of NPR. They produced a segment that used many of the same sources, condensing much of the same material into eight-minutes of audio. Both stories cover the dialog taking place among some evangelicals concerning whether or… [Read more…]
I’ve previously mentioned C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) as an example of a notable Christian with an evolutionary view of life’s history. I find it interesting that his name is so often evoked by critics of evolution. The Discovery Institute, the think tank which leads the Intelligent Design movement, loves Lewis and publishes a quarterly journal all… [Read more…]
Maybe I should apologize for being too tough on the Miss USA contestants last month [read post]. None of them seemed to understand what a scientific theory was, but it may not be their fault. Apparently science education materials sometimes get it wrong and kids can be misled. My wife and I just bought a… [Read more…]
The cover story in Christianity Today this month is called “The Search for The Historical Adam“. Writer Richard N. Ostling did a good job of introducing the scientific problems facing the idea of a first human couple and gave a useful summary of the debate. Check it out.
Should evolution be taught in schools? It looks like someone who was searching for the answer decided to ask all the Miss USA contestants: I don’t really know why they spring these types of questions on pageant contestants, but it offers us an array of misunderstandings to ponder. One thing that stood out to me… [Read more…]
At church recently, one of the pastors asked the question “Do faith in God and science contradict?” Immediately I was jabbed in both sides. My wife on my right and my youngest sister on my left each felt the need to elbow me and tell me to calm down, even though I was sitting peacefully,… [Read more…]
Debating evolution can be interesting, even fun – but sometimes I get a little frustrated when people try to make it about all Nazis or other unrelated stuff. It seems that some prefer avoiding the science and arguing that Darwin led to the Holocaust, racism, and even school shootings. These are bogus claims I may… [Read more…]
Today marks the birthday of that loved and hated British naturalist, Charles Darwin. I came across a sermon by N.T. Wright which happens to convey some of the attitudes toward Darwin, and how they appear to be more intense here in America compared to Jolly Ol’ England. When I worked here at (Westminster) Abbey one… [Read more…]
You may have heard about another attempt to clone a woolly mammoth. This project is being carried out by scientists from around the world, and it’s pretty cool. Meanwhile, at places like the Institute of Creation Research (ICR), Creation Scientists are doing something else. Instead of participating or trying to resurrect a competing extinct animal,… [Read more…]
At a recent convention of theologians, Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler gave a speech explaining why he believes the universe must be young and how important this position is for all Christians. It was a good speech explaining the mindset behind this idea, and his method can quickly be understood by this statement at… [Read more…]
Young-Earth Creationism is dependent upon the idea that a global flood explains away all of the data scientists use to determine an old age for the earth.
My problem with Flood Geology is that it claims a flood did things floods never do, and didn't do things that floods always do.
